Amazon Invests AU$20B in Australia’s AI
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a AU$20 billion investment between 2025 and 2029 to expand and operate its data centers in Australia. This record-breaking initiative aims to boost the country’s cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and position Australia as a global technology leader.
The project supports the Australian government’s vision to grow the economy through AI-driven innovation. According to official estimates, AI and automation could add up to AU$600 billion to Australia’s GDP by 2030.
AWS has been investing in Australian infrastructure since 2012, launching regions in Sydney and Melbourne, along with new Local Zones in Perth. The company recently partnered with the government to build a secure “Top Secret” AWS Cloud for national defense.
To power its operations sustainably, Amazon is also funding three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, adding to its existing renewable projects across the country. Once completed, these facilities will generate enough clean energy to power about 290,000 homes annually.
AWS’s new investment will also expand its AI education and training programs, including the AWS Generative AI Accelerator and AI Ready, which aim to train millions of people in digital and AI skills worldwide.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the investment a major milestone that will create new jobs, strengthen infrastructure, and accelerate innovation. AWS CEO Matt Garman added that the company’s commitment will help Australian businesses harness AI and drive long-term economic growth.
